"A semi-final place was on the line in the evening Pool A game between England and Belgium at the 2014 Rabobank Men's Hockey World Cup. England started the game knowing that only a win would ensure a place in the semi-finals, whilst Belgium only needed a draw to get through. Belgium went 1-0 up in the 13th minute after good work down the wing by Simon Gougnard who passed to Thomas Briels to score. It didn't take long for England to get back level when Nick Catlin struck from the edge of the circle in the 19th minute. Belgium had the majority of the possession in the closing stages of the half but the teams went into the break at 1-1. England only took four minutes from the restart to go 2-1 ahead after great build up play by Nick Catlin who made a great assist for Ashley Jackson to score on his 100th appearance for his nation. However, with seven minutes of the game remaining Tanguy Cosyns drew Belgium level at 2-2 from a penalty corner. The drama was far from over as England was awarded a penalty stroke with four minutes remaining. Belgium were desperate for the umpire to refer the incident but the decision stood and Iain Lewers stepped up and coolly fired high past the keeper to put England 3-2 up and into the semi-finals.
