China started brightly and made it 1-0 in the 7th minute when Liang Meiyu converted a penalty corner. Despite having the majority of the possession, South Africa went 2-0 behind when a defensive lapse by Marcelle Manson allowed Mengrong Wu to score a deflection. South Africa began a comeback in the 42nd minute when Kelly Madsen finished with a half volley effort to take the score to 2-1. However, the quality of China prevailed and 19 year old Wang Na scored in the 54th minute to increase the lead to 3-1. Bernadette Coston pulled another goal back for South Africa in the 63rd minute, and three minutes later the comeback was complete when Pietie Coetzee struck from a penalty corner. The game was not over, however, as China executed a penalty corner to go 4-3 up through Wang Mengyu with two minutes remaining to end South Africa's dreams of a semi-final place.
