India started the more positively and patiently put pressure on the Malaysian defence, and went 1-0 from a penalty corner finished by Jasjit Singh Kular in the 14th minute. India continued to dominate the game but couldn't add to the one goal lead and went into the break at 1-0. India were made to pay for their lack of ruthlessness in front of goal when Malaysia made it 1-1 in the 46th minute through a penalty corner shot from Razie Rahim that trickled over the line. However, three minutes later a failed PC from Malaysia allowed India to counter and re-take the lead with Akashdeep Singh deflecting a shot into the cage. Another counter attack three minutes later put India 3-1 ahead with a skilful finish from Akashdeep Singh to get his second goal of the game. Indian keeper Sreejesh Raveendran then made a fantastic stick save. Malaysia pulled the score back to 3-2 with nine minutes to go through Marhan Jalil to ensure a dramatic finish, but India were able to hold on and gain their first win of the tournament.
